The B's are back

Nice to see the Bruins back in action this week. I just finished watching the Bruins verse Minnesota Wild. Unfortunately it ended with a loss 4-3. They did have a late comeback bid but they fell short. Just thought I'd I'd give some quick observations:

  • I thought the idea was Savard feeding Ryder the puck instead of the other way around. I'm not complaining though.
  • Before those people start on Manny Fernandez please remember Tim Thomas also gave up four goals against Colorado.
  • Minnesota was giving up rebounds all night but fortunately for them no Bruins in sight of them. Need some presence in front of the opposing net.
  • Speaking of which what's with two four goals against nights? What happened to defense?
  • Nice to see Kessel off to a good start.

FBI closing in on suspected Palin email hacker

Did you really think the FBI or Secret Service were going to take Gov. Palin's email hacking lightly? Of course not. In this story they've seem to narrowed the search down to Dave Kernel, 20 a student of the University of Tennessee. Ironicly he's the son of state Representative(Tennessee) Mike Kernel(Democrat). Dave's email has been linked through anonymity service(not so anonymous anymore) that he apparently used to hide his identity. I find it amusing that the guy who ran the service was very cooperative when the FBI came knocking. Dave may have thought it was a harmless prank but I don't think the guys in the suits and pitch black sunglasses have much of sense of humor. To hack into an email account of candidate for Vice President is not something be taken lightly.

Sarah Palin the shocking photo!

I had this photo sent to me by email so I have no idea where it came from. Obviously it's a photoshoped but one could hope! I do believe she's taken a beating by the press. You know the same ones who overlook Obama's lack of experience. The difference is Obama is on top of the ticket and Sarah is the #2. On the other hand she's stolen a lot of thunder from Obama's campaign and it's starting to show in the polls. The sludge the the dems are throwing will not stop. I believe they are in panic mode. It's 2004 again when Kerry failed to successfully squash the Swift boat debacle. Democrats were caught by surprise by the Palin pick and still haven't fully recovered. Do they regret not picking Hillary. Hate to be in her shoes. She came so close to be shunned by Barack. Now another woman could possibly be VP besides her. IfI was a Hillary supporter(I am not!) I'd be furious. So far I believe she's held up under the pressure and has revived McCain's stagnant campaign.

Tougher in Alaska

McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is nothing less than a surprise. Is it risky? Yes he just took away his argument Obama's lack of experience. Though I believe someone from a Alaska is a little tougher than the norm. Plus look at Alaska geographically you've got Russia across the way and you border Canada. There's your foreign policy experience right there. Ok that's a stretch but what the heck.

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

I had a feeling McCain wasn't going to pick someone obvious like Romney(my personal first choice), Rawlenty, Ridge and Leiberman. I believe that any one of those choices ran risks anyway. McCain obviously went for broke. I think it's an excellent choice for VP. It may even garner some still disenfranchised Hillary supporters. Who knows? On top of that she isn't half bad looking either which doesn't hurt. A lot better than Hillary would have been as VP Ewwww!

This is a pretty nifty ad by the McCain camp. I personally don't buy the Obama crap anyway.

Record DUI

Stanley Kobierowski, 34, of North Providence now holds a Rhode Island record. Although I'm not sure he's proud of this one though. He allegedly blew a .491 on breathalyzer which is six times the legal limit(.08) according to Rhode State Police. The highest recorded of someone still living according to authorities. He was arrested after hitting a sign on Interstate 95 near Providence Place mall. He must have had one heck of a hangover on Tuesday after spending the night in Rhode Island Hospital in the detoxification unit. He was arraigned in Lincoln at the State Police barracks on Tuesday. We were lucky he hit a sign rather than a family in a minivan or something more tragic. Congratulations Stanley!

The shooting is being considered suspicious.

I was reading a report on a local shooting here in Providence and a curious line got my attention. "The shooting is being considered suspicious." Boy and I was worried that our local law enforcement wasn't on the ball? What shooting wouldn't be suspicious?

Half - votes?

The Democratic Party puzzles me. Why should Obama get any votes in Michigan if his name wasn't even on the ballot. I don't know all the ins and outs of the process but it just doesn't make any sense. This I believe will come back and bite them come November. I'm no Hillary fan but I'll take her side on this issue. Vote's should be counted 100% percent. I'm not sure if I'd be to happy to know that my vote was only worth 50%. If I was a Democrat voter(only an if) in Florida or Michigan I'd be outraged. It's looking better for a "President McCain" in January.

Katherine Brunnell found guilty

Katherine Brunnell was found guilty of 2nd degree murder of 3 year old T.J. Wright today. Personally I believe she should have gotten 1st degree but it wasn't for me to decide. A really sad case overall. T.J.'s still dead unfortunately at least she didn't get off scott free. 10 years seems like a light sentence for killing a 3 year old over spilled milk and yogurt.

Face of a loser

Take a good look at the picture of a total loser as accused Gilbert Delestre took the fifth amendment in testimony yesterday in the trial of 3 year old T.J. Wright. How these two got custody of T.J. and his siblings is beyond me. In care of a young girl with her own kids and with a loser ex-convict for a boyfriend. Going out drinking and partying to boot. Not exactly the "Cosby's" here. DCYF should be ashamed of this and should be equally responsible.Today the trial will be going into closing arguments and to jury. This story just fills me with anger and sadness. If justice is not served here it will be a travesty.

T.J. Wright trial

I've been following the trial of the death of three year old T.J. Wright. Well sort of at least . I get sick just reading about I've tried to avoid it but I do find myself drawn at the same time. Katherine Bunnel the accused broke down in tears the other day in court. I couldn't help but think it's a little late for that. Maybe she should have thought of that before beating a 3-year old to death over some spilled food after night out partying(says a lot right there) with her low-life scum boyfriend. The details of T.J. injuries are just gut wrenching to read. I hope to God that justice be served here and T'J. Wrights brutal death not go in vain. One has to wonder how DCYF dropped the ball and placed him with these two F(*&76ng loser's is beyond me. It's really sad and blood boiling to think about this.

Hockey, golf and a polygamist cult

This is a quote from this article I just read that just made me laugh:

• An expert on TV said the women in that polygamist cult cover themselves in frontier dresses so that they’re unattractive to other men. I give them credit for succeeding.

• And why would you want to marry even one of them, let alone three or four?

• For that matter, isn’t one wife more than enough for any man?

• I got my own wife’s permission to print the above sentence — what, you think I’d say that without clearance?

Being a hockey fan I enjoyed this one:

• I would watch more golf if, as in hockey, checking was allowed.

These are from Providence Journal's columnist Mark Patinkin. I recently became a fan of his and I enjoy his wit and wisdoms. Keep up the good work Mark.

Have another donut!

How I didn't have this marked on my calender I don't know. It was the anniversary of Jim Schoenfeld's (Then coach of the New Jersey Devil's) famous " Have another donut " remark after the Bruins trounced his Devils 6-1. Now that was entertainment! Remember when the Bruins actually would win playoff series? It seems like so long ago. Anyway here a link for more details and enjoy the video.

Thomas Wright

I remember when this story broke originally three years ago. When Thomas Wright died while being cared(if you call it that) for by his aunt(Katherine Bunnell) and loser boyfriend Gilbert Delestre. Prosecutor's charge that they beat the three year old boy, which cracked his skull and femur which killed him in Woonsocket early Halloween morning in 2004 . Over what from I remember reading was some spilled food. This story made me disgusted because my son is the same age as Thomas would be. I hope these two loser's rot in jail to say the least. Flyers Knock out The Habs

The Philadelphia Flyers knocked out the Montreal Canadiens last night 4-2. Needless to say I jumped for joy at the news. Carey Price was not invincible nor the next Ken Dryden. My hometown Bruins think showed that Price and the rest of the Canadiens that they weren't unbeatable by taking them to 7 games. Perhaps the Flyers were taking some notes.

On a side note: Jim Fox of Yahoo Sports predicted that both the Bruins and Flyers would fall to the Canadiens in 5 games. Neither of which was even close. Keep drinking that kool-aid they serve at the Belle Center.

Re: Hillary vs. Bill (O'Reilly)

Apparently it is true. Hillary Clinton will be on "The O'Reilly Factor" tonight. It should be interesting. He's been wanting this one for years. It should be interesting.

Obama shocked!

I think many of us can agree that the Reverend Wright's comments and views are "Outrageous" and Appalling". Now Barack Obama it seems has come to a similar conclusion yesterday. It's as if he suddenly became aware of his outrageous antics and conspiracy theories. The guy is a loon. Anyway Barack's response reminded me of this scene from "Casablanca".

Bush on the Economy

Of course one side blames the other on the economy in politics but he does bring up a couple of things that perplex me. Why the opposition to exploring more resources in ANWR(Alaska National Wildlife Refuge) and opposition to expanding refining capacity? The last new refinery(in the US) was built over 20 years ago I believe. Shouldn't we expand our capacity. It seems as if an oil drill worker on a platform in the Gulf of Mexico gets a cold or stubs his toe the price of gas goes up a nickel.Granted it may not make a huge difference in overall price but at least we'd be doing something.

Here are some interesting links I found:

WikiPedia : ANWR drilling controversy

I guess you'd have to decide for yourself.

Hillary vs. Bill

Bill O'Reilly that is. Not Hillary's husband though that might be interesting in itself. A developing story on Drudge Report has Hillary appearing on the O'Reilly Factor on Wednesday. Has hell frozen over? Must be an attempt to top Obama's appearance on the Fox network recently. It should be interesting. This a big coup for Bill as I know he's tried to get her on the show for years.

Bruins game 6

In case you missed it last night here are some of the highlights. I'm still in awe of this game. Simply one of the best I ever seen. Phil Kessel's first goal is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.

Canadiens vs. Bruins

I'm simply awestruck by this years Boston Bruins team. In recent years I've felt they've lacked the grit and most of all heart. Almost the forgotten team in the Boston area due to the success of the Patriots, Red Sox and more recently the remarkable turnaround of the Celtics. Even the other day NESN(New England Sports Network) who broadcast Bruins and Red Sox game preempted a game five of the Bruins vs. Canadiens for an early season clash of the Red Sox and Yankees(meaningless at this point in the season) which caused a minor backlash. Talk about no respect. I remember the Bruins moving the game time around early in October for the Red Sox. What gives?

Well I'd have to admit having seen one of the best playoff games I've seen in awhile I've found a new respect for this team. They show a tenacity and spirit I haven't seen from this team since the early nineties. Aside from the first game of the series (a 4-1 loss) they have played Montreal toe-to-toe in each game. I have to admit myself I and given them little chance to win no more than a game. They have now forced a game seven against the heavily favored and talented Canadiens. They just don't give up! In recent years I've seen this team fold at the least amount of adversity. Now anything seems possible. Just perhaps some of the winning spirit that has caught on around town has caught on. I certainly hope so. Even if they don't prevail on Monday(blasphemy!) I think this team and franchise has reached a turning point and will be a force to be reckoned with in the future.

Go Bruins!!

Boyfriend...free for the taking

I found this while browsing craigslist. I nearly lost it.

Date: 2008-03-30, 10:23PM EDT

I've had this boyfriend sitting here for three years and as I do my spring cleaning I have decided to get rid of him because he is useless...

The boyfriend comes with 2 nice Dell Computers(charged to his ex girlfriend's credit card), a Jeep(unregistered and uninsured), a 22" televison(given to him by his younger sister)and a guitar. Boyfriend also comes with tons of baggage, so I would suggest a truck or SUV to transport and 2 strong people to carry the load.

This boyfriend has a lot of potential, but for the most part he does not work. Maybe a good 'fixer-upper project' for someone who has the time/patience/insecurties. May just need some new wires, bolts, or to learn how to screw.

This boyfriend comes equipped with an assload of excuses and lies. Even better, he will call your mom and best friends crying about your arguements.

Although he is an antique, this boyfriend is not worth much.

If you are interested in constant headaches, financial distress, and sexual frustration, please contact the above email address.

Personal Politics

While doing some afternoon channel surfing I came across in interesting news bit on either CNN or MSNBC. It featured a ten year old asking the current Presidential candidates some standard questions about the environment and graded them afterward. McCain and Hillary both took the time to answer the youngsters questions. Barack apparently was a bit busy but the kid got a shot with his wife Michelle which she answered for him.

I didn't think much of it until I came across this article by Providence Journal columnist Mark Patinkin about recent visits by Obama and Clinton before the primary vote this past week. They both spoke at the same venue so it was perhaps a fair comparison. Obama apparently had good organization and had a large and enthusiastic turnout. The downside was that he pretty much gave the staple stump speech and left the state soon after. Hillary in comparison though speaking to a smaller crowd and was a bit disorganized. On the other hand she was apparently a bit more energetic and more personal. She even made a tour of state after which to small state like Rhode Island can be a big deal. Let's face it on a national scale this state is usually a blip on the map.

The connection or question here is Obama becoming sort of "Rock Star" candidate to busy for the little people. "All politics are local" as the old saying goes. Could this be Baracks weak point? In case you missed it Hillary carried the state by a wide margin.

Greatest 80's Rock Albums

I graduated high school in 1985. We didn't have iPods back then but we had our Sony Walkman's and boombox's to listen to our music. With MTV in it's infancy and when they actually played music video's around the clock. The format was changing too. No not to MP3's but from vinyl to cassette to the birth of the compact disc later in the decade. Though I enjoyed many different musical genre's rock was my main choice. The list I complied here were my favorite albums(remember when people listened to whole albums?) of the decade. It was tough to narrow down. They aren't necessarily the most critically acclaimed nor perhaps the bestselling. This is more of a personal list so I'm sure there are those that disagree or feel I left something out. They are the type of albums that you(or myself I should say) could pop in and listen the whole way through and enjoy as it a whole entity. I'm going to go in chronological order as best I can. Here I go....

  • Back in Black by AC/DC (1980) - If you were an adolescent male in the early 1980's and didn't own this album you were pretty much a loser. This set the tone for the early part of the decade at least as far as rock music was concerned. I played my cassette so much it wore off the lettering.
  • Moving Pictures by Rush (1981) - You could hardly turn on a rock radio station and not hear a song by Rush at least once a day. Highlights from this one are "Tom Sawyer","Limelight" and "Red Barchetta". To me this was there high point as they seem to get artsy fartsy after this one.
  • Pyromania by Def Leppard (1983) - This was another that I wore out the cassette to by playing so much. It was also another that pretty much everyone had. It also hit around the time MTV came about and they also had cool video's to go with it.
  • Synchronicity by The Police (1983) - The Police have the honor of the first rock concert I ever went to. I still remember my ears ringing and throat hoarse from yelling so much. I had a great time . "Every breathe you take" was played way too much of course but it was a solid album none the less. Too bad it was to be there last(studio album).
  • Eliminator by ZZ Top (1983) - They had the coolest video's on MTV. Fast cars with beautiful long legged women what more could you ask for. I finally got to see them live a few years later which was a great show.
  • 1984 - Van Halen (1984) - Little did we know that this would be David Lee Roth's finale with Van Halen. They were never the same since. That being said this was a kick ass album with Eddie Van Halen scorching on the guitar. It was different from previous VH albums that now featured Eddie on synthesizers("1984","Jump" and "I'll wait") . They made rock music fun.
  • White City - Pete Townshend (1985) - This was one of those albums I didn't appreciate until many years later. I love "Give blood" and Face the face" which build slowly then have an infectious sound.
  • The Joshua Tree - U2 (1987) - This was album that I believe that made U2 a household name. One of my favorite albums of all time. It's hard to pick a favorite song as they are all good.
  • Hysteria - Def Leppard (1987) - Yes I know another Def Leppard album. I listened to this one probably even more than Pyromania. I did get to see them live this tour too. I appreciated them a lot continuing on after the loss of drummer Rick Allen's arm in an auto accident. I still blast this one in my car, yes I still have the cassette to this one.
  • Appetite for Destruction - Guns n' Roses (1987) - These guys swore, drank, smoked and had groupies hanging off them with no shame. They were unpolished compared to other hair metal bands of the time and they didn't give a crap. This album still kicks butt today and is solid the whole way through.
  • Dr. Feelgood - Motley Crue (1989) - This was Motley Crue at there best. "Don't go away mad" is the ultimate breakup song in my opinion. "Kickstart my heart" is best played while driving.
  • The end of the innocence - Don Henley(1989) - "The heart of the matter" is still a personal favorite about love lost. A very reflective and personal album that in my opinion is one of his best. It hit me at a very rough period of my life and it still stands as one of my favorites.
  • Journeyman - Eric Clapton (1989) - I saw Eric in concert touring for this album and felt the hype of Eric Clapton is underrated. It's a cool and mature rock album before he mellowed a bit. I still love this one.

Now I'm sure I've left out some obvious ones but like I said this was a personal list. The 1980's were a time of personal changes and world changes. I started off an sometimes awkward pre-teen, kissed my first girl, graduated high school, drank like fish, did two years in the army, moved away from home, moved back home, broke up with girlfriend, and went to college. You get the idea. The albums above were the soundtrack to my life at the time. It cheered me up, consoled me when I was depressed, and got me going when I just wanted to let loose a bit with some air guitar.

McCain gets ticked off

News item: McCain grows irate at NY Times reporter

It should be a justifiable in court to be able to punch any reporter from the New York Times. That being said the question was ludicrous anyway. Kerry as running mate? That's a joke right? That would be political suicide especially due to his already shaky relationship with conservatives. Might as well hand off the Presidency to Obama at that point. Don't even bother with the election just appoint him to it. I wouldn't vote for Kerry for city dog pooper scooper.

The question is: If Ron Paul is in a forest and he announces that he is quitting the Presidential race will anybody hear him?

Just a thought.

Rocked the vote

Well I did my civic duty and voted today. The turnout seemed to be a bit heavier than usual though not overwhelming. I'd have to admit though the people that were running could have organized the polling area a bit better. They had tables set up by last name but the area was poorly marked as to which line your suppose to get in. As one guy put it behind me they've been doing this for hundreds of years you'd think they'd get it right.

I'd have to admit this was the first Presidential primary I've voted in so the process was a bit different. First they ask your name and address and affix a sticker to a card which you sign which if I read it right, saying you voted in a Democratic primary. Therefore your now affiliated with the Democratic party. They did have another line that you could sign back in to your party affiliation(or unaffiliated) . I was a bit confused because the paper I signed said I voted in a Democratic primary though I voted Republican. I handed the paper to the guy and he reads and comments with a puzzled look "Yeah, you can do that". I probably messed it up and didn't need to do so but I did any way.

Well if it's your turn to vote be sure and do so.

Rock the vote

Tomorrow is primary day here in Rhode Island. Yes I do plan on voting tomorrow. Though I do plan on voting for John McCain the Democratic race is interesting to say the least. I still don't understand quite the appeal of Obama. Granted he may be a great orator but I do feel he lacks serious experience to be taken serious as an actual President. Though I'm no fan of Hillary I would think that she would be the more intelligent choice. I do also worry of a match-up of Obama vs. McCain in November. I know McCain would probably have Obama for breakfast in almost any debate. Remember that Nixon was thought to have won his debates with Kennedy also but lost. I'm sure there are those that compare Obama to JFK. Kennedy was a decorated WW2 veteran served both a U.S. Representative for at least 5 years and one full term as U.S. Senator(See Wikipedia). I do think that surpasses Obama's experience. As the late U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen said to Vice Presidential candidate Dan Quayle "Senator, Your no Jack Kennedy". Neither is Barack in my opinion.

One radio commentator made an interesting comment today. It was Jay Severin of Boston's 96.9 Wtkk actually advocated voting for Hillary. If one knows Jay you know that he absolutely loathes the Clintons with a passion. His point was that to really mess up and disorganize the Democrats you should vote for Hillary. I guess the idea would be that it would cause them to fight amongst themselves more than against the Republicans. Hows that for strategy?

Well whatever your choice may be please vote tomorrow if it's your turn. I know I will be.

200 people frozen at Grand Central Station

My father-in-law sent me this one. I'm not sure of the exact details of it. Over 200 people froze in place for about 5 minutes. I thought it was kind of cool to see peoples reactions to it. Enjoy!

Frozen in Grand Central Station

Obama the new JFK

I thought I'd check out Obama's website today just to see what this guy was all about . At the top we get this quote:

I'm not asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington...I'm asking you to believe in yours". - Barack Obama Website

When I first saw that I immediately thought of another Democrat many years ago saying:

"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." - President John F. Kennedy

Sound familiar? It's obvious Barack has done his homework in what resonates with voters. It seems to me that he empowers his followers which makes them feel a part of something bigger. Which kind of explains his massive following. Question is does he have substance behind the words? Does Hillary have a chance? Does McCain have what it takes to beat this guy? Though I believe in McCain I think it's going to be a tough one.

No excuses - Part 1

This part 1 of a series on my battle with cigarettes.

"No excuses that I know" - Alice in Chains

Just a short while ago I was going to go out and get some cigarettes because I was running low. Of course I get the usual riot act from my wife about it. Not really that bad but it's usually goes something like "Why do you smoke when you know it'll kill you?". How do you rebut a question like that honestly? You can't really. Of course my 5 year old son doesn't help much by saying stuff like "I don't want you to die Dad.". Perhaps he really is helping me in his own way. Even though he may be only five his words way heavy on my heart.

I'm a forty one year old male who has been smoking since I was about fourteen. It 's probably a familiar story how I started. I don't remember how exactly it started but it was with a close friend of mine Roger. I know it could be a cop out to blame him but I'm not going to do that. I made my own decision to start and I take responsibility for it. At first we used to sneak our parents cigarettes or whoever we could borrow from at the time. I lived with my grandparents and Mother all of whom smoked so it wasn't too hard to "bum" a smoke. I remember my kid brother finding one of my packs and promptly informing my mother. Of course I took the usual denial root at first but after a persistent interrogation I confessed. She wasn't visibly too upset that I was smoking but wanted me to be honest about it. For many years after ward she'd even buy them for me.

I at first didn't really feel the effects of smoking perhaps until I was tested physically tested when I was in basic training in the army. I had problems mainly in the running part of training. I frequently fell out of formation during a PT(Physical Training) run. One drill Sergeant pretty much ordered me to quit which I sort of did for a couple of weeks but I was soon after back smoking again. For my two years in service I always had a problem with PT.

McCain and the New York Times

Ok so this is so last Thursdays news but I'm just getting up to speed here on this one. Thursday the New York Times reported this article about a possible chink in John McCain's armor.I did want to comment on this because of a few bits I've read about this just today. One was from a local newspaper columnist Mark Patinkin from the Providence journal who even thought the New York Times could have done a better job of reporting.

A quote from the Times article states that

"Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity."
and a couple of paragraphs down from that we get..

"even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity."
That my friends is the extent of the evidence of an inappropriate relationship. I fail to see any smoking gun or proof that he had done something wrong. At worst it was some advisor's looking out for their boss.

Another commentary from radio talk show host(WTKK 96.9 Boston) Michael Graham compared them to a high school newspaper or should I say reporting not worthy of a high school paper. Their is only the innuendo of wrong doing rather that hard facts. The rest of the story goes on to give us a history of John McCain without any more supporting evidence.

Mark Patinkin's column takes an example from the story of Woodward and Bernstein's book(which I'm in the process of reading) "All the President's Men" when both reporters submit a story to their editor Ben Bradlee. Bradlee then looks over there work and says “You haven’t got it.”. Maybe similar judgment should have been used in this case.

Humor in Politics

I found it humorous the guy helped George Bush get elected by siphoning votes away Al "I invented the internet" Gore in 2000, announced today on NBC's "Meet the Press" once again he is running for President.Yes the Ralph Nader who garnered .3 of the national vote in 2004 has announced his third party candidacy. Of course he starts off with attacks on both Democrats and Republicans. I'm not quite sure what he thinks he's going to accomplish. The only thing that that comes to mind is that it would give him some attention and he might make himself feel important. Let's face it no one pays attention to him otherwise. What was his last major accomplishment other than preventing Al Bore err I mean Gore from being President.

Democrats despise him because some still blame him for the Al Gore debacle in 2000 and Republicans love him for it. You can read the full story here.

Ramblings

I'm not sure lately but I've had a rough time coming up with stuff for this blog(and a couple of others I have). Maybe it's just the winter time blues. When I do surf on the net it's usually just the same stuff. Nothing great to comment on. It's seems my focus is blurred. This even applies to real life too. I want to write up something but can't seem to find a subject worth spending a lot of time with.

One such item I've been procrastinating on is my son's pinewood derby project. Though we did finally pick up the paint for it yesterday and plan on painting it later today. I'm still a bit upset with my wife bringing them to her cousins and got them cut. That was before my son and I had even picked out a design. Perhaps I should have been a bit quicker but we had picked out designs and now I have to make something out of the already cut wood that's not even close to what we wanted. I know she meant well. It's suppose to be a father and son project.

McCain for President

To be honest I hadn't given a whole lot of attention to the Presidential primaries. At least not on a day to day basis. At first I was bit undecided has who my choice would be. Being as lean on the conservative side of the political fence Democrats need not apply. At first it was possibly either Fred Thompson or Mitt Romney as my first two choices but even then they weren't very strong ones. Well Fred Thompson's campaign seemed to fizzle and take off. Though it seemed that Mitt would make a decent run for it. I think he was a bit too polished and almost Al Gore/John Kerry stiff as personality goes. As we all know they both dropped out already. That leads us to John McCain. He may not be my first choice but I believe he's got the leadership skills to lead our country. He's a man of faith and good character which I can identify with and admire. As of now, March 4,2008(Rhode Island primary), and in November 2008 he'll get my vote.

I am proud of my country

“For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country, because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback.” These were spoken by Michelle Obama recently and apparently she got into a little hot water over it. Though it'll probably just be a blip on what's turning out to be the Obama Express. Of course it was a hot topic on talk shows I heard like Laura Ingraham I heard last night on the way home from work. Of course Obama's people tried to put a spin on it that she meant to say something else. Pretty obvious they were in damage control mode.
I did come across this article from local columnist Mark Patinkin of the Providence Journal. I thought it put into perspective of how unique our country is compared to other countries of the world. I just wanted to share that article because I think many of us take for granted many of the simple things that make our country great.

Coffee

I can't begin the day without coffee. Sometimes I've stood bleary eyed in front of the coffee maker holding my cup waiting impatiently. A couple of times I almost poured the coffee in the sugar bowl. It also doesn't help that where I live in Rhode Island you can hardly sneeze without hitting a coffee shop. I mainly drink it in the morning and early afternoon before work( I work second shift).

Granted too much coffee I'm sure cannot be good for you. I myself kind of get sick and tired of all the studies showing ordinary items that can cause you harm. Many times you've got to consume huge quantities of said item over an extended amount of time. The thing is if you consume healthy things in huge quantities they can't be good for you either. Imagine if all you ate was carrots. Well it may improve your eyesight at first. That may be offset by longer ears and your skin tone turning orange.

Well anyway back to the coffee. I came across this article on how to defend your coffee habit at Lifehack.org. Well I've got to go now. I'm in need of a refill.

At the Beach

A few days ago after a break between class and work I went to a local beach to kill some time. To me it's one of those places where you can just have some quiet time to yourself. Just listening to the ocean can be soothing. I thought of those times as a kid I'd get up early before the sun came up(and everyone else) . Hop on my bike and ride down to the beach to watch the sun come up. I thought it was pretty cool then. I know at times since then when I've had stressful times in my life I'd take an early ride to the ocean to cool off. It seems to be a place I'm drawn to. It's a nice way to recharge your batteries. I feel bad for those that can't experience that feeling. I'm sure many of us have different places that we can draw back on.

Lost cellphone

I've got poor record of losing, breaking and trying to recycle it(not on purpose). I'm of the age where I go from one room to another and forget why I went there in the first place. I don't use it a whole lot except to call my wife or close friends. So when it's not around I don't miss it much until it's time to go somewhere. The first one I lost was at a GM auto show where we were test driving a lot of cars so it would have been next to impossible to retrieve it. The next one the screen cracked after I sat on it apparently. The phone itself worked but the screen was no good. The next one I lost while taking my son on a bike trail. I didn't realize it was missing until we got home. So I went back to where we we had started the bike trail and sure enough it was there. The only problem it was in about 100 pieces on the ground. Either I had or someone else had run it over. To replace that one I purchased a used one off Ebay for a lot cheaper than to purchase a new one. Just yesterday I realized that it was missing well sort of. When I first couldn't find it the first night I just thought I'd left it in the car and I'd get it the next day. When the next day came around it wasn't in the car I knew something was up. That brings us to today when I received a call from a friend (in my contact list) that received a call from someone. She thought that it was someone from my telephone. After few tries we tried the number and got a hold of the guy who had it. He had found it in my recycling bin mixed in with some newspapers. I was able to pick it up today fortunately he only lives about fifteen minutes from my house. I tried to offer some cash as reward but he declined. I'm fortunate to find it because it would have been a hassle to replace. OK well I've got to head to work. Now where did I put that phone again...

Internet Porn

The internet and porn it seems almost goes hand in hand(pardon the pun). I've got to admit I've been tempted by the darker side of web almost since the beginning of my surfing days. I've downloaded countless pictures, movies and surfed until the my antivirus software would go off telling me I've strayed too far again.

My wife has been somewhat tolerant at times and even joked about it at times. Tonight we had one of those serious talks again and sure enough it was in the mix of things. She'd rather I'd not of course. She feels like she's just being compared to the other girls and doesn't feel special. It's obvious that I haven't done my share of reassuring her that she is the one I truly desire. How can I defend surfing for porn? I don't even try and justify it anymore because any attempt to do so is a weak argument. On a moral standpoint it's sort of coveting thy neighbors wife so to speak. Stephen Covey(7 Habits of Highly Effective People) says that it "can breed an inner darkness that numbs our higher sensibilities". In short she's not happy about it and would rather I'd not look at it. It's difficult at times for a number of reasons. One it's sort of human nature. I enjoy looking at women. It's not that I physically or emotionally desire to actually be with them in any way. In that way I'm committed to my wife completely without question but, in my wife's heart it's the same as cheating on her(or pretty darn close). Which those feelings don't help our already struggling intimate life as you might imagine.

Well after our talk tonight I couldn't sleep very much. Perhaps it's a twinge of guilt or just feeling depressed about it all. I came on the computer and decided to do what I can to delete what porn I did have and throw out what I had on CD's and such. It may seem useless because I already know where to find it again and I've been down this road before. How am I to reassure her that she's the only one for me? I'm pretty sure that's what she's looking for. The feeling of her being special in my heart. I've done this before with no better result and it just seems to come back in a circle. What can I do that's different?

Thank you

I got the following message from my mother-in-law. I don't usually pass these along but I thought it was good story about what I believe is our most precious commodity...time. I hope you enjoy.

A young man learns what's most important in life from
the guy next door. It had been some time since Jack
had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life
itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear
across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in
the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to
think about the past and often no time to spend with
his wife nd son. He was working on his future, and
nothing could stop him.
Over the phone, his mother told him, "Mr. Belser died
last night. The funeral is Wednesday." Memories
flashed rough his mind like an old newsreel as he sat
quietly remembering his childhood days.
"Jack, did you hear me?". "Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I
heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him.
I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,"
Jack said. "Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I
saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce
about the many days you spent over 'his side of the
fence' as he put it," Mom told him.
"I loved that old house he lived in," Jack said. "You
know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped
in to make sure you had a man's influence in your
life" she said. "He's the one who taught me
carpentry," he said. "I wouldn't be in this business
if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching
me things he thought were important...Mom, I'll be
there for the funeral," Jack said.
As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the
next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was
small and uneventful. He had no children of his own,
and most of his relatives had passed away. The night
before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped
by to see the old house next door one more time.
Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It
was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap
through space and time The house was exactly as he
remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture,
every piece of furniture....Jack stopped suddenly.
"What's wrong, Jack?" his Mom asked. "The box is
gone," he said "What box?" Mom asked."There was a
small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk.
I must have asked him a thousand times what was
inside. All he'd ever tell me was the thing I value
most." Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the
house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for
the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had
taken it. "Now I'll never know what was so valuable to
him." Jack said. "I better get some sleep. I have an
early flight home, Mom." It had been about two weeks
since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one
day Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. "Signature
required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by
the main post office within the next three days," the
note read. Early the next day Jack retrieved the
package. The small box was old and looked like it had
been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was
difficult to read, but the return address caught his
attention. "Mr. Harold Belser" it read. Jack took the
box out to his car and ripped open the package. There
inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands
shook as he read the note inside. "Upon my death,
please forward this box and its contents to Jack
Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life." A
small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing,
as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the
box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket
watch. Running his fingers slowly over the finely
etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found
these words engraved: "Jack, Thanks for your time!
-Harold Belser." The thing he valued most was...my
time. Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then
called his office and cleared his appointments for the
next two days. "Why?" Janet, his assistant asked.
"I need some time to spend with my son," he said.
"Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!" "Life
is not measured by the number of breaths we take but
by the moments that take our breath away.
Think about this. You may not realize it, but
it's 100% true.
1. At least 2 people in this world love you so> much
they would die for you.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in
some way.
3. A smile from you can bring happiness to
anyone, even if they don't like you.
4. Every night, SOMEONE thinks about you before they
go to sleep.
5. You mean the world to someone.
6. If not for you, someone may not be living.
7. You are special and unique.
8. When you think you have no chance of getting
what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you
trust God to do what's best, and wait on His time
sooner or later, you will get it or something
better.
9. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something
good can still come from it.
10. When you think the world has turned its back
on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back
on t he world.
11. Someone that you don't even know exists loves you.
12. Always remember the compliments you
received.Forget about the rude remarks.
13. Always tell someone how you feel about them;
you will feel much better when they know and you'll
both be happy
14. If you have a great friend, take the time to let
them know that they are great.

Send this letter to all the people you care
about, if you do so, you will
certainly brighten someone's day and might change
their perspective on
life...for the better.

To everyone I send this to.... Thanks for your
time !

What we can learn from our kids

I still find it amazing what I've learned from from my five year old son Joshua. This past weekend my wife had brought my son to one of those McDonald's restaurants with an indoor playground. At the same time apparently someone else was having a birthday party. You can imagine the noise level was pretty high. When I talked to my wife on the phone I asked her if there was something she needed, she just said "ear plugs".
Anyway my son not really knowing any better seemed to integrate himself in and out of the party. So well he even scored some cake and ice cream too. Afterwards when it was time to do presents he was still right there handing the birthday child his presents and even helping the boy open them. We neither knew the parents nor even what the birthday's boys name was.I kind of went over just to kind of make sure he didn't overstep his boundaries. The boy's mother didn't seem to mind and neither did anyone else for that matter. What really touched me about all this was that the birthday child (and some of the party goers) were children with Down's Syndrome. I really admire his boldness and willingness to help others. I hope he never loses those qualities. I know sometimes as adults we shy away from those that are a little different from the rest of us. Perhaps out of fear or misunderstanding. I couldn't help but be a bit proud of my son that day.

Learn German

I'm not sure why but this video from Youtube with a pretty young German girl teaching the language I find fascinating. I was stationed in Germany(then West Germany) so it brings back some memories of the German girls. I did learn some of these numbers and basic phrases while I was there so it's a nice refresher. She's sweet girl and great to listen too.

Dysfunction

Even though this is suppose to be a humorous picture (found at Despair.com) it speaks more truth than may be first realized. At least that's what I got from it when first saw it. I'm sure we all know people who are either been in multiple relationships gone bad or just seem to pick the wrong people as friends. They may complain about the other person or the situation. Not taking responsibility for there situation.

I tend to believe that you choose to be in the relationships your in. "It is so much easier to blame other people, conditioning, or conditions for our own stagnant situation" Stephen Covey writes in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I couldn't agree with this more. I've been in relationships and in situations where I felt powerless. I didn't realize that I chose to be there. It's just a pet peeve of mine when I hear people complain like this. What are they doing about it. many stay for years just reacting to the situation and not changing anything. Expecting the other person to change. The only person you can effectively change is yourself and your decisions. Take responsibility for your life.

Introduction

Thanks for coming by and welcome to The World According to Bob. If you came here via my Wordpress blog then this may be a bit repetitive. I've do have a couple of other blogs which deal with my hobbies but they seem at times a bit limiting when I have ideas that don't quite fit into the themes of them. This blog is to cover what they don't. What you'll probably see here issues from political, news, family, relationships, and personal stuff.

Why the switch from Wordpress? Well the #1 reason is photo's. I went to post a picture with my post recently and with Wordpress you have to host the picture somewhere else it seems. With Blogger you just upload a picture and it's there. #2 I'm familiar with Blogger and it's functions. Like I said I've got a couple of other blogs through Blogger so I'm used to the functions, features and also it's limitations( hey nobody's perfect).

Thanks again for coming by. If you'd like to visit the previous version at Wordpress click here.
